Accordion Noir radio playlist 2024-05-22: Return 2 Live Noir Take 2!

May 23, 2024

Today is Accordion Patent Approval Day, celebrating Cyrill Demian’s successfully getting the paperwork back with a stamp of approval in 1829 enshrining him as the inventor of the accordion! That’s after Patent Filing Day on May 6th, when the clock really started ticking. (And then there is Friedrich Buschmann’s 1822 claim, substantiated by more of a “vibe” than any hard evidence.) The Little Search Engine That Could (Until It Couldn’t, Not Coincidentally After Stopping Not Being Evil) even enshrined the occasion in an animated Google Doodle today! Consequently people have had accordion on the brain lately (and I’m not just talking weirdos such as Bruce and myself, who are permanently in that condition!) As you’ll see below, recently (on May 6 “International Accordion Day”, see above) Bruce was invited to appear on a guest panel for CBC Saskatchewan to discuss the instrument’s oddly stretched-out lifespan. (Just wait until the squeeze begins!) Some of the local Saskatchewan luminaries who sat with him (virtually) on that panel also turn up in this week’s playlist. Emerging from long struggles against an uncooperative computer upgrade, Bruce has recently tried his hand at resuming live broadcasts from our home studios at CFRO Co-Op Community Radio (a weekly routine for well over a decade, rudely interrupted by a global pandmic), to mixed results. But there’s nothing for it but to refill his bellows and try again!

If your Apple or Android (or plain old RSS) podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to the episode’s availability yet, you can enjoy listening to it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:

AccNoir–2024–05–22, Return 2 Live Noir Take 2!

CBC Saskatchewan had Bruce on for International Accordion Day and they made a video! So share perhaps the double disappointment of seeing what radio people look like, along with me struggling to do live performance for the first few times in years.

this is the first accordion podcast/broadcast I´ve ever heard and I absolutely loved it! So good to feel part of a global squeezebox (am I allowed to say that?) community. I play piano accordion, mostly latin and klezmer music -though not at the same time – and I´ve just started writing an accordion blog. I´ll be back in touch when it´s a bit more developed and asking you to recommend it to your listeners. Keep up the great work and thanks for bringing so much pleasure to my Sunday morning!
