Accordion Noir radio playlist 2013-05-15: Accordions In Eurovision
Monitoring the social media sphere for accordionic discussion as we do, we always get tipped off when the annual Eurovision song contest comes around again, because though having an accordion in your country’s song isn’t part of any proven pathway to Eurovision success… just about every year some country decides to opt for the squeezebox representation route (possibly because they love accordions, and possibly because they really don’t want to win and have to shoulder the expense of hosting the following year’s competition) and the commentators can’t help but note the old gambit. Ten years ago co-host Rowan took a deep dive into the Eurovision song contest’s long history and the many, many instances of accordion representation there through the years, presenting as the 336th episode of our weekly accordion-themed radio broasdcast a curated highlights reel covering 49 years of Eurovision from 1968 up to 2007. This leaves out the past 16 years (only the past 6 years from this episode’s original air date) but probably it’s about time for us to do a part 2 and explore more recent developments (eg. Koza Mostra’s 2013 “Alcohol Is Free”) in the musically niche field of Eurovision accordion tunes. If you missed this episode the first time around, you can enjoy listening to it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:

Cheers & squeeze on!
Can’t help but notice that Geoff Berner‘s great “When DD Gets Her Donkey, Everything Will be Alright” never made it past Canada’s geo-political barriers to be in the Eurovision finals.
But it’s video shows that it would have fit right in:
(Disclaimer: I don’t just think this song is fantastic because Geoff asked me and my daughters to be at the video shoot, which was in a huge warehouse where they stored a bunch of weird movie props, which made up for it being really cold in there.)
