The theme of last night’s hour-long episode of CFRO Co-Op Community Radio’s weekly Accordion Noir broadcast is a look at the squeezy offerings at this year’s Vancouver International Folk Music Festival, a longstanding tradition that has taken the last couple of years off for pandemic-related reasons.  It features many acts that often feature squeezebox, but relatively few who are guaranteed to be serving it up this particular weekend. Specifically, patrons need to keep their ears open for our friends in Finland’s Vildá, who headlined our 2019 Accordion Noir Festival three years ago in their Vancouver debut. (If you are sufficiently taken by them, you may want to go look up their guest appearance on our radio program!) If your Apple or Android (or plain old RSS) podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to the episode’s availability yet, you can enjoy it as digital audio courtesy of the beleaguered Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:

There may only be one accordion at the Folk Fest this year, so make sure you say “Hi!” to Hildá and Viivi of Vildá!

Friday 3:50pm South Stage (feature show)
Saturday 2:55pm West Stage, The Power of Three with SINNOI, Witch Prophet (This should be Excellent!)

Just saw this video Vildá made in Chile. Be funny if they knew the Chilean guests at the Folk Fest, Golosa La Orquesta.
Eymün weke che (en mapudungún) – Ensamble Transatlántico de Folk Chileno (feat. VILDÁ)

Golosa La Orquesta (Chile) May have a squeezebox on stage (if we’re lucky).
Friday 4:30pm West Stage (feature show)
Saturday 4:15pm West Stage, Five Alarm Glo w/ Five Alarm Funk

Lache Cercel’s Roma Jazz is ensemble, likely 🪗 band #3?
Saturday 1:35pm West Stage, Swing Time with Christine Tassan (This jam should be something, if there’s squeezebox especially!)
Sunday 3:05pm South Stage, (Lache Cercel’s feature show)

Thanks for reading us here (and hopefully listening to us, there), but if you find you want more, you can always keep up with us on Twitter (@AccordionNoir and @AccordionBruce), Instagram (@AccordionNoirFest), and Facebook at Accordion Noir fansthe Accordion Noir Festival, and the Vancouver Squeezebox Circle. Cheers & squeeze on!

PS. Anybody catch where I announce I’d be playing Sonny Landreth, because I mistook him for the Bros. Landreth, who are playing the Festival? Oops. Sonny L. used to back up Clifton Chenier, and has recorded with accordionists like Steve Conn many times in his long career. The Bros Landreth don’t seem to have been so lucky, yet. Upcoming weeks we will feature some great Sonny Landreth tracks, and if the Bros. pick up an accordion let us know.
