Accordion Noir welcomes Bandcamp gift-cards to support artists on our wish-list.

Tonight’s episode of Accordion Noir features artists whose music is available on Bandcamp Friday when 100% of proceeds goes directly to musicians! So jump down to the playlist below, follow the links, and share some 💸 in exchange for nice sounds.

First though, Accordion Noir Radio turns 15 today! [Bruce] was going through the archives and found an email from Vancouver’ klezmer revolutionary Geoff Berner. It was from November, 2006, two days before Accordion Noir first went on the air, and we didn’t have a name for the show. Rather, we had dozens of names and couldn’t pick one. Down to the wire before our broadcast and Geoff suggested — Accordion Crime Spree. That would have been a few more letters on festival posters over the years.

Pick your favorite from the list of Alternate Noir names below. We left off “Accordion Crimes” because we didn’t want to get lost if Annie Proulx’s book got made into a movie. [Rowan notes: At this early time, Mike Danner of Portland was also already hosting an excellent podcast already named “Accordion Crimes”, featuring him accompanying PDX-area songwriters on his squeezebox. We didn’t want the namespace conflict, nor eventual collision with Annie Proulx’s lawyers when we eg. wanted to get into the world of book publishing as Bruce did, so we carved out our own brand.]

Geoff signed his response with his Myspace page, which is why he just turned 50. We still play a lot of accordionists we met on Myspace. [Rowan notes: it turns out that Myspace was an excellent way for musicians to network with fans and venues, and in retrospect its failure to undermine democratic institutions and promote genocide seems almost quaint. We spent a lot of time and work building up a cadre of 5000 accordion friends on MySpace (here’s an episode of our program exclusively dedicated to them!) only to have them evaporate when FB came around, but have no regrets. The time was not wasted. But I digress. Back to Bruce!] ⏪
