June 2010 contained a highly memorable broadcast incident.  While we were puttering around the CFRO station hallways, preparing to air the episode we had planned, the late-night metal DJ stumbled in amidst a haze of stinging smoke, announcing that the police were tear-gassing sports rioters nearby at the downtown stadiums, a few blocks away.  There are relatively few moments in history when an accordion music program gets to be first on the scene covering current events, but we deccided it was in the public interest for us to throw out our planned program (well, delay its airing to the following week) and improvise something appropriate to the situation for our 236th episode.

This was not the first time we had attempted to musically represent an accordion riot, though it was the first time we shared it over the airwaves — when we were first petitioning the station to allow us to present a weekly program, we needed to make a potted recording both demonstrating the kinds of material we were hoping to share and showing that we were capable of operating the audio equipment needed in order to do so.  Our demonstration included an audio soundscape mashing-up motorbike engines with the delicious dissonance of Miss Murgatroid, to suggest a fictitious history where she performed at a gazebo at the annual Sturgis biker rally and whipped up a wild frenzy of civil unrest.  I believe that excerpts of that demo recording are present in this episode.

I recall that Bruce submitted this episode for consideration for a national broadcasting award, but as usual, we were too avant-garde to have our genius recognised in our own lifetime.  We’ll never forget this episode, however, and probably neither will you.  At its original online home, it logged some 9993 listens, and going forward it can be heard as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive.  Here’s its playlis:
