Accordion Noir radio playlist 2021-06-30: Last June in June
It’s been so flippin’ hot here in Vancouver over the past few days, Bruce was concerned that he wasn’t going to be able to program a new episode of Accordion Noir for your listening enjoyment this week without risking damage to his vinyl records, beeswax accordion reed banks and elderly Apple Macbook in the extreme heat. There was a Very Good Chance that we were just going to repeat last week’s oracular episode of songs about summertime hotness, but in the last couple of days temperatures have dropped by a dozen degrees or so and everyday activities are back on the table once again! Looking at the song titles, he’s still riding the theme of our troublesome summery climate.
Commentary from Bruce:
I had to look up “oracular.” Who can predict when that will be in the title of a future episode?
This week has been horrible here in Vancouver. Hundreds of people are reported to have died in the heat. It’s quite frightening. Amazing to walk outside this evening after the heat broke. If there’s a way to make it so the climate isn’t actively trying to kill us all, we should look into that.
Accordionists for Climate Science (name needs work): “Don’t leave your accordions in the sun. Support policies so they don’t melt in the shade.”
They Might Be Giants’s “Science is Real” could be our theme song.
I’m so glad it’s not so hot. And I’m legitimately fearful of a similar event when there’s also wildfire smoke so people can’t safely open windows. Nobody has AC here. The noisy chaos of some of the experimental pieces on tonight’s show reflect that worry.
If your Apple or Android podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to its availability yet, you can enjoy listening to it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:

Thanks for reading us here (and hopefully listening to us, there), but if you find you want more, you can always keep up with us on Twitter (@AccordionNoir and @AccordionBruce), Instagram (@AccordionNoirFest), and Facebook at Accordion Noir fans, the Accordion Noir Festival, and the Vancouver Squeezebox Circle (another Zoom session this Friday, this time due to extreme heat, following a free hour-long “Accordion Fridays” videostream concert by co-host Rowan! Come for the Stupid Accordion Tricks, stay for the Squeezebox Circle!) Cheers & squeeze on!
Update: Bruce prerecorded this show in the morning. By the time it was broadcast that evening—in less time than it takes to listen to the episode—wildfires destroyed the town of Lytton, British Columbia. Horrible.
