Accordion Noir radio playlist 2021-06-16: Pre-Juneteenth #AccordionBandcamp Friday

Antique black and white photo of a seated African American woman in a long formal-looking dress and hat. Holding a large diatonic button accordion on her lap. Instrument has two bass buttons, but the right hand buttons aren't visible. Seems like a fairly intricately designed model from the 1890s-1910s maybe?

So little of the old (English language) African American accordion tradition got recorded. I don’t know of any of those available on Bandcamp. I can share what I’ve got if you contact me: bruce

The monthly “Bandcamp Fridays” artist-support events are on hiatus in favour of more focused fundraisers for specific causes. There’s a good one coming up this coming Friday, June 18th, commemorating the annual Juneteenth commemoration of the struggle to end slavery in the United States. Our relevant pool of known African-American accordionists on Bandcamp remains woefully smaller than we would prefer. All the same, supporting #AccordionBandcamp, artists this Friday while supporting good work is the theme for this week’s episode of CFRO’s weekly Accordion Noir program. If your Apple or Android podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to its availability yet, you can enjoy it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:

As on past #AccordionBandcamp episodes of our show, purchases on bandcamp seem to be one of the best ways to support artists online. If you know of more squeezebox folks we should promote, please let us know. Not our place to know what artists need, but if people want to give fans a chance to pay them in exchange for music, bandcamp is doing that right now.

Thanks for reading us here (and hopefully listening to us, there), but if you find you want more, you can always keep up with us on Twitter (@AccordionNoir and @AccordionBruce), Instagram (@AccordionNoirFest), and Facebook at Accordion Noir fansthe Accordion Noir Festival, and the Vancouver Squeezebox Circle. Cheers & squeeze on!
