Accordion Noir radio playlist 2021-02-03: Bandcamp Friday Recommendations on Wednesday!

As people who are in the business of giving away music made by others for free (over the radio airwaves), we have long contemplated the question of how to best promote financially supporting the artists whose efforts fuel our weekly broadcasts. Of course, buying from merch tables at live performances gives them a great cut, and Patreon support is pretty direct. It is generally understood however that mp3 sales through the most popular storefronts are somewhat dire, and streaming royalties genuinely abysmal. Bandcamp to the rescue! Already one of the most artist-supporting services (Bruce notes: “on a regular day, artists get like 80% of Bandcamp profits anyways, so do support #AccordionBandcamp the rest of the month too”), since the Covid-19 pandemic put a gentle but firm halt to live music performance across most of the developed world (but hats off to the friends we see gigging in Australia and Cambodia! Gosh, you folks lucked out!) Bandcamp has been helping out many pro musicians whose entire livelihoods have been gutted with one day a month — Bandcamp Friday! — where they waive their cut of fees paid to buy the musicians’ music on their service. It wasn’t always clear whether the essential holiday would be continuing into 2021, but it seems the celebration will be rolling on at least through the Spring — so mark off the first Fridays on your calendars (your Accordion Babe calendars perhaps?) and get ready to support your music heroes on February 5th, March 5th, April 2nd, and May 7th.
Anyway, the first of those is just around the corner at the end of this week, and so this week’s episode of Accordion Noir radio is promoting some of the many, many artists (here’s Bruce’s (mostly Accordion) Bandcamp Suggestions (Collection and Wishlist)) whose day you can make by buying their music (not the first time we’ve done this) — and actually having most of that money reach them! But timing is critical: Bruce notes “Bandcamp Friday is on California time I think. Look to IsItBandcampFriday.com for time-zone help to make sure it is Friday [where you are].” And just a final note before we get to the meat of the matter: Bandcamp isn’t the only thing that makes Fridays special for accordion fans — the Accordion Babe performers have been offering free programs of live videostreams on alternating Fridays (not this week, seemingly) in addition to which… we’re trying out Zoom versions of our monthly Vancouver Squeezebox Circle gatherings the first Friday of every month, at least until the weather puts outdoor get-togethers back on the table. We’ll see you in about 48 hours!
As for this week’s episode of Accordion Noir, well… if your Apple or Android podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to its availability yet, you can listen to it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:
