Accordion Noir radio playlist 2010-10-27: Theremin, Musical-Saw, Glass-Harmonica Noir
From ten years ago, here’s our extra-long (triple-length three-hour) Fall Member Drive episode #201 of CFRO’s weekly AccordionNoir program. At this time we tried to turn over our member drive specials to other under-represented fellow “underdog” instruments who didn’t rate a specialty radio program of their own, so this time around Bruce semantically linked up the three similarly-sounding sources of DIY sonic sine waves: theremins, musical saws, and glass armonicas. Joining us for one of its three hours was fabulous local theremin manipulator prOphecy sun, a local guest expert! Sometimes the specialty content we offer up simply cannot be obtained elsewhere, as evidenced by the 9205 listens this episode tracked at its original online home. You can enjoy listening to it today (all morning long, much to your co-workers’ delight!) courtesy of its new online home at the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:
AccNoir-2010-10-27, Theremin, Musical-Saw, Glass-Harmonica Noir. Monster three hour playlist show, with special guest prOphecy Sun!

MUSICIANS WHO SENT US STUFF FOR THIS EPISODE:
(PLEASE SUPPORT THEM!)Natilia Paruz is worthy of the fandom she’s earned from the hundreds of thousands of people who’ve heard her in the subways of New York. I wish we had the audience she does! http://www.SawLady.com
Thomas Bloch from Paris, France: plays glass harmonica, theremin (cello), the ondes martinet (read about this theremin-ish instrument on his site), cristal Baschet, waterphone, and I bet he could whip out a number or two on the saw if you asked. His website is a great tour of the rarer ends of the instrumental spectrum: http://www.thomasbloch.net
Thomas wrote to correct us – it’s the “ondes Martinot,” not martinet, “except if you are masochist – this last word means whip in french”!)Armen Ra (Persian-Armenian, Hollywood, Californian) sent us amazingly lovely theremin music, playing like none I’ve ever heard, recommended by our friend Baby Dee earlier this year. Thank you both! (I fear some of this got distorted by my clumsiness at the board. You must get the record now!) http://www.armenra.com
William Zeitler sent us these wonderful modern and historical glass harmonica pieces. Truly a master, and he has a great site about various glass instruments. http://www.glassarmonica.com
You should read Louise Marley’s great book, The Glass Harmonica (2001). It’s a young-adult historical novel about a girl who plays Ben Franklin’s instrument for him. I want to read more by her: http://www.louisemarley.com/as/louise-marley/the-glass-harmonica/
