Accordion Noir radio playlist 2010-09-08: Smoothly Shaven

When Rowan picked up the accordion, he had a lush, Samsonian beard that unrolled luxuriously somewhere south of his navel.  After he started squeezing that box, it thinned out considerably.  Now he keeps his facial coiffure closely cropped.  Why are we discussing his personal grooming in relation to his musical practice?  I guess both the mega barbe and the accordion became iconically associated with him, but due to the epilatory effects of the bellows-pumping action, something had to give.  Ten years ago, Rowan was ritually shorn in front of the entire village of Wells, as part of a fundraiser for its annual ArtsWells festival.  I suppose upon his return, Bruce was sufficiently shocked that he named this episode, number 195, of our weekly radio program in honour of the milestone.  At its original online home it clocked some 6345 listens, and you can enjoy listening to it online today courtesy of the Internet Archive.  Here’s its playlist:

This episode is named for the fact that Rowan auctioned off his beard to raise funds for the Arts Wells festival > after our provincial government spent our children’s inheritance and (also) cut all provincial arts funding after giving six billion dollars to Olympic profiteers. (Don’t let your economy be next.) Our cover is in honour of Rowan’s own sacrifice for all that olympic “glory.”
