Accordion Noir radio playlist 2010-04-16: Jazz for Art (van Damme)

April 13, 2020

Me, I always harped on Bruce to pick podcast art that showed an accordion, so there were no illusions about what we were serving up, but he likes to fly under the radar and use album artwork that obfuscates the squeezebox content somewhat.  This specimen represents a moment in the instrment’s history that some modern viewers might view as either egregiously deceptive or impossibly self-contradictory.  But there was a time when hot accordion jazz could be sold with sex, et voila.  The squeezebox historian advantage!

Anyhow, here we are, at episode 174 from our archives, first aired back in April of 2010, a tribute to the then-somewhat-recently (in February) deceased accordion jazz titan Art Van Damme.  At its original online home, it achieved a charted total of 8074 listens, and you can continue enjoying listening to it today courtesy of the Internet Archive.  Here’s its playlist:

AccNoir-2010-04-16, Jazz for Art (Van Damme) (Fundraiser for our own Co-op Radio!)

*Artist – Song – Album (year) – Where are they from? – Contact info if we’ve got it.
* Andy Fielding – Accordion Noir theme (short version, 1:06) – Accordion Noir (2010) – Vancouver, BC, Canada – recorded special just for our show!
* Art Van Damme – Madame Van Damme – Squeeze Me 4: 1951-55 A Lesson In Bop (1954) – USA – (Proper Records)
* Jo Privat (Matelot Ferret, guitar) – Reve Bohemien – Manouche Partie (1960) – Paris, France – This is a really good “musette/manouche/Gypsy Jazz” accordion record. I don’t know where I got it, but it seems to be hard to find? (He’s really important. Go translate a Wikipedia Page on Him so people can learn more.)
* Vetese Guérino (Django Reinhardt & Lula Galopin guitares) – Gallito – Swing Accordion (compilation, 2003) – France –
* Micheael Warlop Et Son Orchestre – Strange Harmony – Squeeze Me 1: 1929-40 Accordion Joe (1935) – (Proper Records)
* Angelo Debarre et Ludovic Beier (Ludovic, acc) – Stomping At Decca – Come into my swing! (2003) – Paris, France –
* Saul Berson Quartet – Ko Ko – Intricacy (2007) – Vancouver, BC, Canada –
* Art Van Damme – Too Close For Comfort – Swinging The Accordion On MPS (1967) – USA –
* Gordon Fleming – Gravel Road – According To Gordie (1953) – Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada – A Toronto collector preserved this CBC Recording.
* Cory Pesaturo – What Is This Thing Called Love – Change In The Weather (2006) – Rhode Island, USA –
* Gato Libre – In Gent, In December – NOMAD (2006) – Japan –
* Accordion Crimes – Tabalistic – Accordion Crimes (2005) – Toronto, Ontario, Canada –
* David Lange – Las Tres Hermanas – Almost Home (2007) – Edgewood, Washington (near Seattle), USA –
* Will Holshouser Trio – Uma Bica – Singing to a Bee (2006) – New York City, USA –
* Andrea Parkins – Schist – Cast Iron Fact (1996) – New York, New York, USA –
* Art Van Damme Quintet – Gentle Art Of Love – Swinging The Accordion On MPS (1967) – USA –
* Squeeze-bot – Contemplation (starts loud) – Polkapocalypse! (200) – Louisville, Kentucky, USA –

This episode’s cover is, Art’s “A Perfect Match” album “with Johnny Smith on Guitar.” I don’t think that’s Art or Johnny in the picture. How come all those cocktail jazz records don’t have the artists themselves in bikinis or covered in shaving cream on the cover?
