Accordion Noir radio playlist 2008-12-05: Late Night Anniversary with Gunshae!
Ten years ago, Bruce and Rowan were indulging in a short-lived tradition he is most likely glad for us to have left behind — returning to the radio station again to air a celebratory anniversary episode of our program during our original time slot, from 2-3 am in the morning Wednesday nights, after the (still-running) Art of Beatz electronic music program (who always found it hilarious that we’d found the one musical genre even more niche than theirs) … and making the most of the difference between prime-time and late-night broadcasting by airing a year’s worth of pent-up material that was simply too challenging, too profane, too listener-hostile or too obscene to air during regular hours without risking a complaint being lodged to the CRTC. At the time Rowan had been sitting in with Gunshae, the “ambient noise” side project of the AoB hosts, lending some fresh accordion chaos to their textured soundscapes, and so to celebrate the moment, as their slot transitioned into our former territory, we packed along an accordion and jaw harp to accompany their more standard instrumentation and improvised some jamz for a small and likely surprised and confused but hopefully-delighted audience. At its original online home, this episode 105 of our program was listened to some 4384 times, but for bold and intrepid listeners unafraid of the future of the accordion (we were too far in the avant-garde, a decade on this playlist still describes a distant future) they will be able to find our prescient program available for online listeners courtesy of the Internet Archive. And now — here’s its playlist:
