Accordion Noir radio playlist 2018-11-14: A Jazzy Buckwheat Zydeco Day!
For those unaware of the full potential emotional range and scope of free reed music across different genres and their specific instruments, they may think it limited to one tone or mode — eg. the “champagne music” of Lawrence Welk, the good times of Frankie Yankovic, the melancholia of French chansons, klezmer’s major/minor modal twist of the knife, and of course tango nuevo evokes knives still more directly — but to someone aware of the complete palette at their disposal, the music can be harnessed selectively to deliberately steer one’s emotional landscape, using its power to enhance or minimise the emotional tenor inherited from whatever else is going on out there in the world. Sometimes we program a set of sad tunes in midsummer… and sometimes, Bruce kicks off with a focus on the late Buckwheat Zydeco in November. It all evens out!
