Accordion Noir radio playlist 2018-07-04: the Curse of the Button Accordion

July 5, 2018

index3

This week’s episode of Accordion Noir radio was guest-programmed by Rowan, the silent second partner often boosting and hyping our squeezebox empire online but conspicuously absent on the air. Bruce had a family vacation scheduled and Rowan needed to come up with an episode. The usual problem: Bruce is the one with the accordion music collection, Rowan just plays the instrument. Did Rowan have enough opportunity to sniff around and suss out a full 60 minutes of worthwhile alt-accordion? He, uh, did not. But as a happy consolation prize, he discovered that Sharon Mannion’s one-woman-play, the Curse of the Button Accordion, about which we heard a great deal over social media but were unlikely ever experience firsthand without first visiting the United Kingdom, had been adapted into a radio play by the Irish state broadcaster. It’s a substantial production, weighing in at some three-quarters of an hour, so we almost certainly dramatically overstepped our bounds and built today’s episode around rebroadcasting the performance in its entirety.

(Also, we had a pair of tickets to the Sunday program of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival up for grabs. If you inquire soon, they may still be available to CFRO members in good standing!)

You can hear this week’s episode as digital audio via the Internet Archive, and to help sell you on it, here’s its brief but potent playlist in total:

Hotline Bling cumbia – Quantic (after Drake)
Accordion War – Young Dot
Accordion Noir theme – the Creaking Planks (after Andy Fielding)
the Curse of the Button Accordion – Sharon Mannion
Objection (tango) – Shakira

Thanks for reading us here (and hopefully listening to us, there), but if you find you want more, you can always keep up with us on Twitter (@AccordionNoir and @AccordionBruce), Instagram (@AccordionNoirFest), and Facebook at Accordion Noir fansthe Accordion Noir Festival, and the Vancouver Squeezebox Circle (coming up tonight at Spartacus Books!) Cheers & squeeze on!
