Last night’s episode of Accordion Noir radio kicked off with dual focuses before settling down into our regular heady melange of all kinds of everything.  First we opened with a couple of tunes by Nathan Abshire, Cajun accordion revivalist of the 1930s-70s, and then opened up the floor to local accordionist Jenny Andersen, whose show “ACCORDION LESSONS: Life Lessons From a Squeezebox” opens tonight and runs through the end of the month in the theatre at Havana as part of the second annual Impromptu Cabaret Festival.  You can hear it (the episode, not Jenny’s show, you have to go out and buy a ticket for that one) as digital audio, but we’ll give you a peek at the playlist so you have a better idea of what to expect:

* Nathan Abshire – Domino Two-Step – J’ai Été Au Bal (I Went To The Dance) (1) (1970) – Louisiana, USA –
* Nathan Abshire – Musician’s Life – Pine Grove Blues (1968)
* Jenny Andersen – Mild Mannered Maverick
* Jenny Andersen – Storybook
* Minnie White – Irish Breakdown – The Hills Of Home (1994) – Newfoundland, Canada –
* Zohra El Fassia – Mayli Sadr Hnine (side 1) – (1956) – Algeria/Morocco, North Africa –
* Zohra El Fassia – Mayli Sadr Hnine (side 2) – (1956)
* Renato Borghetti – Mercedita – Accordionist (1995) – Brazil (Brasil) –
* Rudy Sooter – Won’t You Be My Buckaroo – from Kevin Coffey’s collection (1938) – Harley Luse (1897-1968) acc. (Luse and guitarist/basist Sooter worked with Tex Ritter)
* Jenny Andersen – It’ll All Be Worth It
* Jimmie’s Saddle Pals – Limehouse Blues – from Kevin Coffey’s collection (1941) – Los Angeles, California, USA – (Might be George Bamby’s earliest recordings, age 20. Live on stage at Lyle’s Frontier.)
* El Gran Silencio – Cumbia lunera – Chuntaros Radio Poder (2000) – Monterrey, Nuevo León, México –

Thanks for reading us here (and hopefully listening to us, there), but if you find you want more, you can always keep up with us on Twitter (@AccordionNoir and @AccordionBruce), Instagram (@AccordionNoirFest), and Facebook at Accordion Noir fansthe Accordion Noir Festival, and the Vancouver Squeezebox Circle. I played accordion in the orchestra (piano violin clarinet etc) for a rural amateur repertory theatre production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF in New Zealand . . . .really really tricky key signatures and changes etc but I managed!
