Accordion Noir radio playlist 2017-09-27: Ten Years of Accordion Noir Festivals!

September 29, 2017

We intended to plunge right into this episode’s theme immediately following the conclusion of our own Accordion Noir festival this year (fear not — its website is currently down for repair, but the fest will squeeze on in 2018!) but life came knocking at the door — first we had an appearance from the Wayward Hearts we couldn’t decline, then the Swamp Rabbit Squeezebox fest kicked off in our image… now we could finally get down to the business of celebrating ten years of our festival by programming an episode featuring acts from each of its years!

You can listen to the episode as a digital audio stream (for a limited time) or download it as an MP3 for permanent enjoyment! Here, allow us to guide you through the episode with the following playlist:

The historical run-down of acts who played the Festivals:

Tonight’s sampler began with a track from Angelica Negrón’s band Balún. They’re originally from Puerto Rico, living in Brooklyn now. This week their Twitter https://twitter.com/balunband has been filled with ways to offer support in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Please give what you can: http://remezcla.com/lists/culture/puerto-rico-where-to-donate/

* Balún – Snol – While Sleeping (2004) – Puerto Rico – http://www.balunonline.com (Angelia Negrón appeared in Year 8 of our festival.)
* Geoff Berner – Accordion Noir, “get ‘yer programs” sound check rap – Night of 1000 Buttons (2008) – Vancouver, BC, Canad – http://www.geoffberner.com (Geoff Berner has had to miss a couple of years of our fest due to Tragical Circumstances, but every year has been planned around his involvement and indeed the first festival was just a Geoff Berner concert that he decided we’d call a festival.  Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Geoff!)
* The Fugitives – Snail Shell – Eccentrically We Love (2010) – Vancouver, BC, Canada – http://www.fugitives.ca/ (The Fugitives allowed us to throw our umbrella over one of their concerts in Year 3, while their then-accordionist (following Original Squeezta’ Mark Berube, who has never — yet! — appeared at our fest) Barbara Adler first took the Acc Noir Fest stage in year 2 and has been a regular participant ever since.)
* Maria in the Shower – Don’t Build a Wall ‘Round the Graveyard (Ain’t no one tryin’ to get in) – The Hidden Sayings of Maria in the Shower (2011) – Vancouver, BC, Canada – Visit http://mariaintheshower.bandcamp.com (Maria in the Shower were involved in some of our biggest blowouts in festival years 3, 4 and 5, and their accordionist Jack Garton continues being involved with our fest through his new project the Demon Squadron.)
* Natasha Enquist – Anniversary Waltz – AccNoir-2008-03-07, International Women’s Day! (2008) – Victoria, BC, Canada (and now Berlin, Germany) – http://www.natashaenquist.com (Natasha was the opening act in the festival’s first year.)
* Orkestar Šlivovica – Kristina Čoček – Živeli! (2012) – Vancouver, BC, Canada – http://www.orkestarslivovica.org (Involved years 3-5 plus 7. Now retired but their spirit lives on in Balkan Shmalkan!)
* Amy Denio – Ghosting – Tutto Bene (2010) – Seattle, Washington, USA – http://www.amydenio.com/ (Amy featured in the festival’s first year.)
* Guro von Germeten – Accordion Night – Bad Dreams and Good Nightmares (2010) – Norway – http://www.vongermeten.no/ (Guro was a major coup early on in Kathryn’s tenure as artistic director, appearing in year 5 as our first intercontinental headliner.)
* David P. Smith – Pilot Stream / Last Drinking Song – Mantennae (2010) – Victoria, British Columbia, Canada – http://www.inflatableeye.com/music.html (How did it take us until year 6 to feature David P. Smith? Regardless, his set was well worth the wait!)
* Renee De La Prade – Nerd Love – Accordion Babes 2012 (2011) – http://www.squeezeboxgoddess.com/ (A memorable highlight in festival years 5 and 6!)
* Lonesome Leash – Instrumental – One Foot in Front of the Other (2013) – New Orleans, Louisiana, USA – http://www.lonesomeleash.com (Lonesome Leash performed at our seventh festival.)
* Steve Normandin – Nini Peau D’chien – Paris – Palais Montcalm (2014) – Quebec, Canada (Steve was an essential flavour at our festival three years running, in our sixth, seventh and eighth festivals.)
* Ana Bon-Bon – Bizness – Live on Accordion Noir: January 18, 2008 (2008) – Vancouver, BC, Canada – http://www.myspace.com/anabonbon (Ana, though native to these parts, was off in the UK during our fest’s early years, so we didn’t manage to feature her on our stage until years 8 and 10.)
* Miss Murgatroid – Toys That Don’t Care – Myoclyonic Melodies (1996) – Portland, Oregon, USA – http://www.missmurgatroid.com/ (Miss Mugatroid came out of retirement to perform at our seventh festival.)
* Nefertiti in the Kitchen – Mood – France – http://www.nefertitiinthekitchen.com (Nefertiti and Yeti, below, were both highlights of our ninth festival.)
* Yeti – La Java Blanche – Tapisserie (2007) – France/Netherlands – http://lecrideyeti.free.fr/
* Antti Paalanen – Northern Wind – Breathbox (2011) – Finland – http://www.anttipaalanen.com (And similarly, Antti Paalanen and Iva Nova were the amazing tastes of old-world variety spice livening up our recently-concluded tenth installment of the Accordion Noir Festival.)
* Babsley – Wedding – Yeldyrina Sloboda (2001) – St. Petersburg, Russia – http://www.iva-nova.ru/

PS, it adds up: Rowan double-checked and there is indeed representation from acts performing at each of the fest’s ten years.

Next week — dream picks for our Festival’s next ten years!

Thanks for reading us here (and hopefully listening to us, there), but if you find you want more, you can always keep up with us on Twitter (@AccordionNoir and @AccordionBruce), Instagram (@AccordionNoirFest), and Facebook at Accordion Noir fansthe Accordion Noir Festival, and the Vancouver Squeezebox Circle.
