Accordion Noir radio playlist 2017-02-01: Anti-Authoritarian Noir

February 15, 2017

They aren’t all archival recordings from distant history — indeed, at the pace we’re discharging them, they should be roughly paired, one new episode for every back episode.  However, new shows may unfortunately resonate with themes from the past, not only a decade ago, but from the 1930s and 40s… more accordionful times, for better or worse.  (What Daniel Kahn, on this episode’s playlist, might refer to as “The Good Old Bad Old Days“.)  So, resolved to do what we could with what we had, and keeping in mind that Bruce and Rowan first met producing events at the anarchist bookstore (Bruce wrote a nice song about the White Rose, we should make an accordion recording of it!), we decided to get a little more explicit in the themes engaged by our radio program — no longer concerned solely for sonic aesthetics, we began consciously seeking out songs whose messages and background resonate with what we consider to be the right side of history.  Also we follow in the footsteps of other DJs, and examine the musical traditions of predominantly Islamic countries whose citizens were suddenly stuck with travel bans to the US.  What we ended up with wasn’t quite Antifa Noir, but Anti-Authoritarian is a better rhyme for Accordion anyhow.  You can enjoy the broadcast as a digital audio stream from our parent radio station, or as a downloadable MP3 courtesy of the Internet Archive. Its playlist follows:
