Welcome to the Uprising

January 30, 2011

Here’s the most recent thing a friend sent me.  Good enough for an amusing first post.  Looking back on the age when accordions were very, very popular.  The millions of accordions abandoned in closets for the last forty years are fuel for the current renaissance, like a flood of cheap guitars once fuelled rock and roll.

La Tosca accordion advertisement, happy woman from the late 50's?

Who's MOST WANTED at every party?

Our friend Alan from the Vancouver Squeezebox Circle pointed out that La Tosca was the accordion brand for the Gretsch guitar company.  One of my favourite guitar-players from Seattle, Marc Olsen who played with the band Sage always played a Gretsch.  I love that sound.  Somehow I wonder if their accordions were as nice.  I should mail away for a catalog.

Being the owner of a La Tosca Biviano 98, I must say that it’s pretty awesome. Versatile, wide dynamic range (can get very loud or quiet without bending pitch) and seems light for its size. However … I’ve never played any other accordion, melodeon, bandeon, or other sqeezbox of any kind. So I have nothing to compare against. I do have a catalog, though! 🙂
